With a storyteller's gift, combined with a poet's precision and a painter's eye, Bert Scheirbeek has created his "compositional" novels, of which Keeping it Up is a fine example, a hybrid genre that is unique and effective. If he were writing in one of the world's major languages instead of his native Dutch, his work would surely long ago have reached the large international audience that it deserves.
